Writer's Block: The Real Reason You’re Stuck (And How to Break Free)

Writer’s block is the worst, right?
That moment when you sit down to write, full of ideas, only to feel like there’s an invisible wall between you and the words you need to say.
It’s not just frustrating—it can feel paralyzing.

Over the years, I've worked with incredibly talented writers, each with a story burning in their heart. Yet, most of them felt stuck.
The cursor on the screen? A blinking electronic bully daring them like, “don't even try me.”
When I dug deeper, I realized something important: Writer’s block isn’t about the story you're writing. It’s about the stories we tell ourselves before we even begin writing.
Stories like:
“I’m not good enough.”
“What if no likes it?”
“What if I fail?”
But here’s the thing about stories—they can be rewritten. To do this feels a lot like walking into a deep closet with a dim light at the back. Imagine a closet crammed with old things from past experinces, observations and fears. They are heavy and, for you very real. Yet, the more you move forwaard, clearing those old, limiting stories out of your way, the brighter the light gets until, eventually, you are right there, you've found your light, your essence metaphorically speaking.
For some of my clients, improvement happened in a single conversation. For others, the transformation occurred more slowly over a period of weeks. In all cases though, once the emotional clutter was cleared, these writers didn’t just write—they transformed.
Their lives improved in ways they never imagined: stronger relationships, new opportunities, and most importantly, they rediscovered something intangible they commonly described as their "voice."
If you’re feeling challenged when you write, here’s the process that worked for them that I use as well:
Wake Up Earlier: Use that quiet morning hour to journal and reconnect with yourself.
Map It Out: Pick 3 priorities for the day and make them non-negotiable. Hint: make one of them writing.
Move Your Body: A walk, a dance session, or even stretching in your chair can help clear your mind.
Write for 10 Minutes: Just start. Even if it’s messy or feels awkward, let the words flow.
Reflect: At the end of your day, celebrate your wins and assess what worked.
For me and my clients, this 4-step process was like finding a hidden waterfall in the forest. Suddenly, ideas, characters, and possibilities began flowing again.
